Bamboo Studio News

A Truly Renewable Resource
Bamboos are the fastest growing woody plants in the world. They are capable of growing up to 60 centimeters (24 in.) or more per day due to a unique rhizome-dependent system. According to Simple Earth, the company secures 40% of the bamboos from construction waste debris from China, and the remaining 60% from bamboos plants that are harvested by cutting 1/3 from the top of the bamboo plants. News about Bamboos

Japanese use the Sheath of Bamboos to wrap meat...
The dried sheath of the culm of the young bamboo serves for wrapping up such things as rice sandwiches, meat, and cakes, which are apt to stain their receptacles; also for the manufacture of sandals and the soles of wooden clogs. The leaves of the bamboo grass (which is a sort of bamboo) provide a clean, cool surface on which to lay fish in a basket, the basket itself being often of bamboo split and twisted.

Is That a Bamboo Bicycle?

Just Don't Let a Panda Borrow Your Bicycle
BAMBOO is one of the worlds fastest-growing plants, adding as much as three feet in a single day. That growth rate, along with the giant grasses sturdy hollow stalks (with a strength-to-weight ratio similar to that of steel) may explain why bamboo is being heralded by bikers, environmentalists and social entrepreneurs as a material with no carbon footprint and the potential to provide cheap wheels in poor countries.

Bamboo Houses to the Rescue

Why aren't there more of them?
What can be done to provide better infrastructure and reduce the death toll of natural disasters in developing nations? Permanent bamboo housing. Source: (The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan) A 7.5 earthquake in Limon, Costa Rica, in April 1991 destroyed homes built with concrete and rebar, but all 20 of the more-flexible bamboo houses at the earthquake's epicenter remained standing. When three typhoons swept into the Cook Islands in 2005, one producing winds of 173 mph, they devoured everything in their path - everything, that is, except a group of bamboo houses on the beach. Missouri's Bamboo Forests

These huge stands of bamboo were called canebrakes

Imagine a tall and expansive stand of bamboo, 20 feet tall with shoots an inch thick. It's about 4 miles long and about 1/4-mile wide. This bamboo thicket has no trees and is a forest unto itself. It sounds like something from China, where you might find a panda bear, doesn't it? Surprisingly, lush bamboo forests this large once were common in Missouri, and remnants still exist. These huge stands of bamboo were called canebrakes and could be found close to our streams and creeks. Canebrakes varied in size and grew in the southern half of Missouri. Source: mdconline

The Planet's Most Eco-Friendly All-Occasion Dinnerware

What is it made from?

Bamboo Studio Dinnerware is made from the bamboo sheath. The sheath is a protective covering found on newly emerging bamboo plants. As the plant matures, the sheath falls to the ground and most often is unutilized. Our process collects these sheaths and then they are cleaned, boiled, laminated to the desired thickness, and pressed into shape. The result is disposable/reusable dinnerware that is elegant, strong and 100% biodegradable. [read more]

How Eco-Friendly Is Bamboo?

A bamboo grove also releases some 35 percent more oxygen into the air than a similar-sized stand of trees.

Bamboo is making waves as an eco-chic new fabric, and growing environmental awareness has also boosted interest in bamboo flooring, building materials and furnishings. But just how earth-friendly is this resource? A. Bamboo’s environmental benefits arise largely out of its ability to grow and spread quickly — in some cases three to four feet per day — without the need for fertilizers, pesticides or much water.
